About Our Show

"The Face of Homeless" is a stage production written and directed by Vitelle Webb, that shares her own personal testimony of her family's ordeal with homelessness.  The show also depicts stories from various testimonials of different homeless individuals in order to share a range of perspectives.

Between 2010 - 2014, Vitelle and her family experienced homelessness multiple times.  She and her then husband often lived in their vehicle along with their two small children.  Over this period of time Vitelle learned first hand what the needs of the homeless were as well as the lack of assistance there really is when a family needs it most.  Instead of the non-profit organizations helping her family to get back on their feet like she expected, many turned her away because she either "was not pregnant", "did not have an alcohol problem", "was not a single parent", or some other reason that disqualified her family.  The fact that her family simply could not afford to pay rent at the moment was not enough to get help from the hundreds of organizations she reached out to during this time.

This harsh reality was what drove Vitelle's passion to share this little known truth with the world.  Not only had she been so blind to the homeless situation in America like so many others, she had no idea that the organizations she had donated to for years would have a list of reasons they could not come to her aid when she needed them.

"I thought that's what they were there for.  I've always donated thinking I'm making a difference but at the end of the day there are still millions of people who are turned away from the same organizations I donated to.  People need to know the truth."  ~ Vitelle Webb

Not only does this production reveal some very upsetting truths about the organizations in this country, it also reveals a truth about ourselves.  Every individual who witnesses this performance first hand is sure to find themselves in one of the characters portrayed.  Sadly the character most relate to is the one who represents the ignorance of our culture today: Peggy Sue.  The fact of the matter is, the definition of "homeless" is simply being without a home; a roof over your head, which likely means living on the streets; it does not define a gender, age or race.  Yet when people envision a homeless person, they typically see an old black man who hasn't shaved in years, is dirty, digging through the trash, drunk, and so on... this is the stereotypical face of homeless.

The goal of this stage production is to change that visual and help people see that there are many homeless people in our country today; most that you wouldn't recognize.  Some of them work with you; Some of their children go to school with yours; You've probably even talked to someone who may live homeless at the grocery store without it ever crossing your mind where they will sleep that night.  When we develop a new face to this thing we call homeless, we will see, and therefore be able to address the problem more productively without the initial assumptions.

Vitelle Webb, with the help of volunteers through her organization, The Feed the Homeless Tour, has been able to successfully rehabilitate and/or provide for hundreds of homeless people; not because they have the funds or resources necessary; but simply because they have first hand knowledge of what is needed to get back on your feet when you find yourself without a proper living arrangement.  Even more importantly, Vitelle and her group of volunteers have the hearts to want to make a difference in the homeless population.  With the help of this stage production, the soon to release book "The Homeless System", and the possible movie in the near future... or whatever else lies ahead for her, Vitelle is sure to raise awareness, change perspectives, and make a difference beyond even her wildest imagination!
